Permit requirements vary by job: the City of Dallas typically requires permits for work that changes structural openings or alters egress, and many retrofit or full-frame replacements also need permits — check Dallas Building Inspection before work begins. Texas does not have a statewide license specifically for window and door installers, so focus on hiring a contractor who carries general liability insurance, workers' compensation (or a waiver), local business registration if required, and good references. Also confirm federal EPA RRP compliance for work that disturbs painted surfaces in homes built before 1978 and get all permit pulls documented in your contract.

Dallas has hot, humid summers and occasional severe storms, so choose products rated for the climate: look for NFRC-labeled windows with low U‑factor and an appropriate SHGC (lower SHGC helps reduce cooling load) and ENERGY STAR products recommended for North/Central Texas. Consider double- or triple-pane insulated glass with Low‑E coatings and inert gas fills for efficiency, and impact- or reinforced glazing and strong frames if storm resistance is a priority. Equally important is correct flashing, sealing and installation to prevent air and water infiltration — a high-performance product can underperform if installed improperly.

Ask for at least three written, itemized bids that list product brand/model, glass type and ratings (NFRC/ENERGY STAR), frame material, installation method, permit handling, tear-out and disposal, timeline, and payment schedule. Verify who provides warranties: manufacturers typically give product warranties (materials and glass) while the contractor should provide a written workmanship/install warranty; get both in writing and confirm service response terms. Avoid large upfront payments, request proof of insurance, check references and local reviews, and require final lien releases and a walkthrough acceptance before final payment.
