Texas does not have a single statewide trade license specifically for window and door installers the way some other trades do. That said, legitimate contractors should carry general business registration, current commercial liability insurance (and workers’ compensation if applicable), and any required local registrations or permits. Cities such as Dallas have building-permit and inspection requirements for certain replacements or work that changes openings or structural framing — always ask the contractor for proof of insurance, references, a written contract, and any local permits or registration before work begins.

In Dallas’s hot, sunny summers and occasional storms, prioritize good solar control and thermal insulation: look for NFRC-rated products with appropriate U‑factor and low SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient), Low‑E coatings, and insulated (double‑pane or better) glass with gas fill if available. Durable frame materials (vinyl, fiberglass, wood‑clad, or thermally broken aluminum) and proper flashing and weatherproofing are critical to prevent air and water infiltration. For storm protection consider impact‑resistant or hail‑tolerant glass where appropriate. Also check Energy Star ratings for your climate zone, and ask about manufacturer and labor warranties. Finally, verify whether your local utility or municipal programs offer rebates or incentives for high-efficiency products.

Installation time and price depend on scope and complexity. A single unit replacement can often be completed in a few hours to a day; a full‑house replacement commonly takes several days to a couple of weeks depending on the number of units and trim/finish work. Cost drivers include unit size and style, frame and glazing materials, energy‑performance options (Low‑E, gas fill, insulated frames), whether openings are modified, permit fees, and removal/disposal of old windows and trim. To get an accurate plan: obtain multiple written estimates that list materials, labor, timeline, permit responsibility, cleanup, and warranty details, and make sure the contract specifies payment schedule and completion terms.
